History of the megamix: Cameron Paul Oldschool Medley (Phunkula Edit)

One of the best remix services back in the day was Cameron Paul's Mixx-It. Mixx-it was a DJ only subscription service that ran from 1986 until the mid 90s. Cameron Paul was based in the Bay Area and used to kill it in local clubs and on KMEL with his mixing skills. He also had success in the charts with his remixes, notably Salt'n'Pepa's Push It, which was a global hit. However, Cameron Paul medleys was his best work according to many of his fans. The power mixes and medleys always rocked. Cameron Paul's mixing style was one of the cleanest, smoothest and most musical ever heard. It was always easy to quickly spot when someone else mixed Mixx-It tracks other than Cameron Paul since those mixes were not as high quality.

Here is a real gem from back in the day. A set of Cameron Paul oldschool medleys that have been edited into one long megamix. 100+ tracks in the mix. This has to be one of the best oldschool megamixes ever produced thanks to the skills of Cameron Paul who is now officially the uncrowned king of all oldschool medleys. Hail to the king. I wonder what the man is doing these days? Enjoy.

History of the megamix: Cameron Paul Mixx-It Power Mixes

Cameron Paul used to kill it in the 80s in the clubs and on the radio with his mixes. Then there was his subscription service for DJs only Mixx-It releases. It was always a treat to get that latest Mixx-It release in the mail every month. Especially the megamixed bridges that linked together the main remixed tracks. These were edited into longer sets that became the power mixes at the end of each year featuring the freestyle, miami bass and dance tracks that were popular on the Westcoast at the time hyped up with the odd classic TR-808 beat or electro jam. If you can get your filthy paws on any early classic Mixx-It releases, then go for it. They are totally worth it.

Cameron Paul was a true master with his characteristic smooth musical flow mixes that featured not only tape edits but also heavy use of the most interesting sections from 12" instrumental and dub versions. Cameron Paul inspired a whole generation of aspiring DJs around the globe with his master mixes. Enjoy!

History of the megamix: Bite This! Boombox Vol 5

M^2 0wnzored the hip hop scene when he tore it
up with his beatbox and SL1200s back in 85-86.

The raw energy and soundscape created with a simple
beatbox, tight cutting and basic EFX still sounds
phunky phresh over 20 years later. Producers to this
day still continue to bite his beats.

Enjoy!

History of the megamix: Scratchmasters Jam

Continuing the preservation of 80s megamixing history, Phunkula presents the New York Scratchmasters Jam series of bootlegs that were released as mostly one-sided 12"s back in 1984-1985. These were better mixed and multi-tracked than the Scratch Party Series and still rock harder than AC/DC to this day. The standout is the Beatbox release (vol 5) with its multi-tracked classic electro goodness. Those were the days, skipping class, taking the bus downtown to pick up the latest Scratchmaster bootleg. Props to Disco Patrick for the label scans. Click on the pics to leech.

History of the megamix: Z-Rock Scratch Party

Back in the early 80s there was a series of bootleg 12"s released with multi-tracking scratch mixes on the Z-rock label. The mixes were kind of sloppy but captures the emerging DJ megamixing energy that could be heard on late night "black" radio stations at the time. This is what I spent my lunch money on back in the day at the local record store in tha West. Phunkula brings these lost gems for your enjoyment in a lame effort to preserve megamixing history (props to Disco Patrick for the label scans). Click on the label pics to leech.

History of the megamix: Where's My 808? aka Oldschool Electro Megamix Vol 1

Phunkula mixes electro classics and beats to bring back that 80s late night megamix mayhem that rocked the airwaves around the world back in the day. Remember KISS, WBLS, KDAY and all the pirate stations all over the world from London to Amsterdam? Listen closely to spot your favorite electro jam or beats in the mix. Respect to the true pioneers of the razor blade edit Latin Rascals and all the mastermixers who started it all. This mix is a couple of years old now but the music in it is timeless.
